Several legislative changes are being considered by the Department of Transport in order to encourage more ecologically friendly car usage in South Africa.
The following recommendations are included in a revised white paper released by the department this week: Stricter parking policies; Access restrictions for private cars; Higher licence fees; Road pricing or area licensing.
Kaya Biz with Gugulethu Mfuphi spoke to Elenor Mavimbela who is the spokesperson for Automotive Association (AA), about the proposed changes as well as the high fuel price hike this week.

Mavimbela shared how higher fuel prices aren’t surprising right now, given the repercussions of all the accidents that have disrupted crude oil supplies.
She said that prices are projected to rise even further, making it critical that you find strategies to save money on petrol.
The price of petrol has increased by R2.43/litre for 93 octane, while 95 octane will climb by R2.33/litre, giving customers a temporary reprieve from the charge.
The inland price of petrol has reached a new high of R24.17 for 95 unleaded and R23.94 for 93 unleaded.
