Springbok rugby player Elton Jantjies has been released from police custody after being temporarily detained on charges of maliciously damaging property during a flight from Dubai to Johannesburg on Sunday, 15th May 2022.
In an article by News24, Elton was involved in an incident at a toilet cubicle.
The report alleges that Jantjies spent 10 minutes banging his fists on the toilet door until his fists bled, all while a flight attendant locked herself inside the cubicle.
A light was damaged in the process.
As a result, Elton Jantjies was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport and charged with maliciously damaging property.
According to a Police spokesperson, Col Athlenda Mathe Elton Jantjies was released on bail.
“The SAPS can confirm that the 31-year-old man was arrested at the OR Tambo International Airport for malicious damage to property has been released on bail”, Mathe said.
In a statement by the 31-year-olds agents, InTouchSports, Elton is said to be remaining compliant with the investigation.
“It’s alleged that while onboard the plane, a light was damaged. We believed that the incident has been unnecessarily heightened. Our client however remains compliant with the investigation process and will address this matter with the seriousness if beckons”.
Jantjies is expected to appear in the Kempton Park magistrates court on Monday, 16th May 2022.
