Former City of Joburg Mayor, Mpho Moerane is fighting for his life in hospital, following a car accident.
Moerane is said to be in a stable but critical condition having sustained serious injuries in an accident over the weekend.
No further details about the nature of the accident has been provided at this point.
The ANC Joburg branch did however, confirm the status of the former mayor and said he is receiving the best medical attention.
“Cde Mpho Moerane is in a critical but stable condition, receiving medical attention in hospital,” the party’s Dada Morero provided in a statement.
Mpho Moerane is the current ANC Head of Caucus in the City of Johannesburg and the current head of the ANC regional task team.
He briefly served as the Mayor of Johannesburg, having been elected in October 2021 after the death of his predecessor, Geoff Makhubo.
Makhubo died from Covid-19 related complications and another Joburg mayor, Jolidee Matongo died in a car accident on the Golden Highway in Lenasia last year.
Prior to his accident, Moerane was expected to contest for the position of regional chairperson at the ANC Johannesburg elective conference which is to take place over the weekend.
The ANC has wished Cde Moerane a speedy recovery and requests that the family and ANC be given space to provide support to him during his recovery.
