Following the passing of another student at Dale College, how safe do you feel your kids are at school? Do you trust that the teachers are as vigilant as they say they are?
“As a parent, have you been assured that every teacher is certified in first aid? Would you be confident that your child would be safe should there be a robbery or anything alike?” Asked Thomas and Skhumba on The Morning Show today.
A listener shares: “Firstly I feel like my kids are privileged. But I have a question for you guys, do the parents have a lot of choices when it comes to the schools they should send their children to?
“For instance, you apply through the government and they place you wherever and you have to take the space. Parents don’t have a lot of choices and again, they don’t have the resources.”
Melanie, who’s an educator in Sandton says she’s taught at every kind of school you can find in South Africa.
“I can also say that there’s definitely a big disconnect between the schools that you get in the suburbs and the townships. Currently, I’m at a government school and I had to go do level 1 first aid training and level 2 first aid training.
“But when I taught at a school in the location no one even mentioned it. it’s actually sad that it’s not a compulsory thing that every teacher in South Africa should undergo first aid training,” she shares.
What are people saying on social media:
School aren't safe, it is funny how some workplaces have a clinic and nurse on a daily but schools have no clinics or a nurse readily available for kids. #ThomasAndSkhumba

It should be mandatory that they do basic first aid training#ThomasAndSkhumba
#ThomasAndSkhumba parents must search their kids for weapons . It's impossible for 30 teachers to search +300 students every morning
