Pola Maneli, a South African artist, created today’s Google Doodle to honour Charlotte Maxeke.
The 151st birthday of Charlotte Maxeke, a South African religious leader, social and political activist, and the first black woman to graduate with a university degree in South Africa, is commemorated by a Google doodle.
Charlotte Maxeke was a scholar, an evangelist, and a torchbearer for Black South African women’s rights. She is often regarded as the “Mother of Black Freedom” in South Africa.

Charlotte Maxeke graduated from Wilberforce University with a bachelor’s degree in 1903, making her the first Black South African woman to do so, as well as the first with a university degree in America.
The submarine SAS Charlotte Maxeke of the South African Navy is named after her.
Maxeke excelled in a variety of subjects in school and was lectured by W.E.B. DuBois, a prominent Pan-Africanist scholar.
Maxeke died in Johannesburg in 1939 at the age of 68. The previous “Johannesburg General Hospital,” now known as the “Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital,” bears Maxeke’s name.
