Greyhound, a luxury South African coach line, just has stated that it will restart operations and begin running buses on Wednesday, April 13.
According to reports, Greyhound was sold last year by Unitrans Passenger and is now back on the road in South Africa after a 14-month hiatus. Around 800 people were left without a job after the company closed its doors.
It struggled to keep up with low-cost competitors in the bus passenger market, which led to its owners announcing plans to abandon it in 2020, at the height of the country’s Covid-19 pandemic. For the bus company, the pandemic was the final straw.

The new owners, an unidentified private investment firm, have expanded the fleet to 70 buses, excluding trailers. Unitrans planned to auction off Greyhound and Citiliner assets, including 66 buses, trailers, and spares, but instead sold them to new owners under a commercial deal.
Greyhound’s departure, according to deputy minister of transport Sindisiwe Chikunga, created a vacuum in the premium transport coach market.
“As the transport sector and the nation at large, we heartily welcome back the return of this brand of luxury coach line,” she said.
“Greyhound will continue to provide a reliable and safe transport to more than one million passengers per annum, crossing over 20 million kilometers, thus assisting the department of transport in the provision of integrated public transport solutions,” Chikunga said.
