Minister of Police Bheki Cele has told parliamennt that about 67 South Africann Police Serce officers have died by suicide in the last two years.
Cele said told Parliament that 30 police officers had died by suicide between April 2020 and March 2021, with another 37 officers between April 2021 and January 2022.
“A total number of 30 individual cases of SAPS members, who committed (died by) suicide, was registered from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021. A total number of 37 individual cases of SAPS members, who commited (died by) suicide, was registered from 1 April 2021 to 31 January 2022,” said Cele.
Cele said that the Department of Police is taking steps to assist cops who are in need. The intervention will aid in the reduction of the rising number of cops who dying by suicide.

A number of causes were suggested for the increased frequency of suicides in the department’s analysis.
According to Cele, the department is putting in place intervention methods to address the problem of policemen who commit suicide.
He also claimed that a lot of professionals were involved in the staff health and wellness program to assist officers and their families.
“Employee health and wellness services are offered by registered professionals which include psychologists, social workers, chaplains and occupational health nurses. These services are highly confidential and voluntary,” he said.
