Netflix has announced that it will be investing R929-million in the South African film and television industry.
They announced this at this year’s 4th Annual South African Investment Conference on Thursday, 24 March, at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.
The funds will be pumped into the creatives industry by 2023, with the funds covering one international production and three local shows.
Kaya Biz with Guguletthu Mfuphi spoke to Jan Vermuelen who is the My Broadband Editor about what this will mean for the South African film industry.

“Netflix is committed to South Africa for the long term and we’re investing in talent both in front of and behind the camera,” said Shola Sanni, the company’s director of public policy in sub-Saharan Africa.
Netflix has around 200 million subscribers in over 190 countries, with South Africa being a popular destination.
The investment will result in four productions, three local and one foreign, all of which will be shot in South Africa by 2023.
