The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has called for Human Rights Day to be changed.
The red berets have said that they are ‘rejecting’ Human Rights Day as a concept, and want it to be called Sharpeville Day.
Phemelo Motene spoke to EFF Spokesperson Sinawo Tambo who gave clarity on the party’s standpoint with regards to the day.

Tambo spoke about how the history of the day has been distorted, and what the day is really about.
He said the ruling party (ANC), has an obsession with monopolising the liberation struggle as its own.
“In EFF’s understanding and conception, today, 62 years ago, marks the anniversary of the Sharpville Massacre, which was the defiance campaign led by Robert Sobukwe and the collective pan-Africanist movement. They stood against pass laws that sought to regulate the movement of African people in their own land,” said Tambo.

Sharpeville Day
In a statement released on the 21st of March by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), rejected Human Rights Day as the highest form of revisionism.
They also propose that the day be recognised as Sharpeville Day, to honour the lives of fallen heroes who perished on the day.
“This is in honour of those who were slain by the apartheid government, for refusing to have their movement controlled and dictated to them in their own land. We salute the brave Pan-Africanists who led from the front.” reads the statement
