Just like the birds and bees talk, the birth control conversation can be just as uncomfortable for some parents and their teens.
However, chances are that they already started thinking about having sex or are active.
Our parents didn’t have such conversations with us hence some of us were teenage parents.
To avoid our teens from falling into the same path as us, let’s be open with them and allow them to ask questions without feeling any judgment.
Siphiwe says his teenage daughter fell pregnant because he didn’t have the talk with her on time. “It’s important that as a parent you speak to your children. I attempted to have this conversation with my daughter who stays with her grandmother but I couldn’t. I tried speaking to her mother about taking her to family planning and she turned a blind eye.
“Five months later she came back to tell me that our child is pregnant. So it’s very important that we speak to our children about these things,” he shares.
For another parent, she regrets taking her daughter for family planning.
“My daughter was thirteen to fourteen years old and I heard she hangs with other girls who are dating. I decided to take her to the clinic to prevent and when a day when she didn’t sleep at home I shouted at her.
“Her response was that she thought when I took her to the clinic it was me giving her permission to go and sleep around. I regretted that day since. Yes, it’s a good thing but these kids are dangerous on the tongue,” she recalled.
