The EFF has condemned the appointment of Raymond Zondo as Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court.
In a statement issued after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the appointment of the new Chief Justice, the EFF said with Zondo at the helm, there will be no stability at ConCourt.
The party is of the view that Zondo easily descends into the political arena.
“The EFF rejects the short-sighted, factional and uninspired decision by Cyril Ramaphosa to appoint Acting Chief Justice, Raymond Zondo as the next Chief Justice. In what can be described as a reward for treating Ramaphosa with kids gloves at the commission, Zondo was appointed. Despite arguably having the most delegitimising and compromising interview in front of the Judicial Service Commission,” the statement reads.
According to the EFF, Zondo’s appointment effectively means that the capture of our judiciary by white-monopoly capital and its interests has been completed.
Condemning the appointment of the new Chief Justice, the EFF said that “Ramaphosa and Zondo are fulfilling each other’s dreams of leading the height of the arms of the state, without having added any value in their upward trajectory.”
On Thursday, President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed Raymond Zondo as the next Chief Justice.
The President appointed a panel, chaired by Judge Navanethem Pillay, to evaluate nominations made by the public and to shortlist nominees who fulfilled the advertised requirements for nomination.
After considering the Report of the Nomination Panel, President Ramaphosa identified the following candidates for consideration for appointment:
– Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga
– Justice Mandisa Maya
– Justice Dunston Mlambo
– Justice Raymond Zondo
