Get to know Nobantu Vilakazi
Despite being pretty naughty in high school, Nobantu was always in the Top 10 achievers. She admitted to DJ Keyez that she bunked school many times and would get into trouble a lot.
She was bullied in school for being skinny and never wore skirts because she would be teased.
If the corridors at George Khosa Secondary School could talk, you’d hear all about Nobantu’s frivolous high school years.
Throughout her schooling career, music was always at Nobantu’s core, despite her gogo being “totally against” her passion.
“My gogo always pushed me into academics. She didn’t want me to pursue anything in music. Regardless of my track Phezulu being a hit on radio stations, my gogo didn’t care. She always asked, where’s the money?”
Looking back, she doesn’t regret the decision to pursue her musical talent. She understands that her family wanted her to be secure financially and because her gogo didn’t have the same opportunities she now has, music was always the “unsafe” career path.
Her rise to the top didn’t just fall into her lap and Nobantu revealed that she inboxed every SA artist for a chance.
“I dropped everyone a DM. Black Coffee, DJ Stokie, Kabza De Small, I inboxed everyone, telling them who I was and asking for a shot to ride on their beats,” Nobantu shared.
She took some time off music after having her son but has made a comeback of note.
