There’s been a public outrage directed a Huawei South Africa’s employment ratios in the country.
According to the Department of employment and labour, Huawei, the Chinese telecommunications company employs about 90% of foreign nationals in its South African unit.
This also allegedly includes all five of the company’s top officials.

The Department also said that their employment practices violate “employment equity” regulations which impose a limit of 40%.
Immigration Regulations allowed Huawei to employ 60% South Africans and 40% foreign nationals.
Thulas Nxesi is taking Huawei Technologies SA to court for violating the Employment Equity Policy by employing 90% foreign nationals among its more than 690 employees.

The government has taken the telecoms giant to court and wants the court to order Huawei to comply with the employment rules and pay a fine of R1.5m or 2% of the unit’s revenue, whichever is greater.

Huawei South Africa released a statement saying they are prepared to comply with the country’s laws.
“committed to continue engaging further with the Department on our equity plan. Huawei is committed to complying with local laws and regulations.” read the statement.
