MacFarlane Moleli is a respected journalist, reporter and newsreader with years of experience in the media industry. He’s worked here at Kaya 959 as a newsreader for the breakfast show and is currently one of the trusted stand-in current affairs presenters.
His life’s journey has been an intense one and he shares the missteps and key learnings every chance he can. The reason he loves to share his story of recovery and overcoming is simply to give hope to those going through a similar dark time.
MacFarlane Moleli joined Skhumba and Mbali for Blom Blom on Good Friday. The conversation shed a light on the journalist’s less-serious side. He also spoke about the darkest times in his life and how he overcame them.
Life at YFM
YFM was MacFarlane Moleli’s first commercial radio home. He had previously worked at Radio Islam but YFM was his big break. The brand is young and it sets the youth agenda of the day; it was no different during his time.
In fact, the station was in a transition while Moleli was there, the old guard was slowly moving on to “grown-up” radio stations. Of his craziest memories at Y, he says the morning the breakfast team he was a part of spent getting tattoos on air. The whole city was abuzz that morning.

In a previous interview, Moleli mentioned that the quote “News people are the midwives to history” is the reason he continues to do what he does. Not only is he a seasoned journalist and reporter but he’s also one of the best storytellers in media.

On keeping a balance
While talking to Skhumba and Mbali about the hardest time he’s gone through in his life, when his first wife took the children and left him, he talked about the little ways he keeps balanced today. “Every single morning, I try to go to the Mosque. I never miss my morning prayers,” MacFarlane Moleli said.
