Musician Musa Sukwene was a recent guest on Blom Blom on Good Friday with Skhumba and Ndumiso.
Musa spoke about being grateful to his father for allowing him to leave school and pursue other interests when he realised he wasn’t strong academically. He says the conversation with his father gave him the confidence to pursue his true talents.
Family life
Musa Sukwene is full of nothing but praise for his parents when it comes to how he grew up. He was clear that his family was well-of and he had a comfortable life. He wanted for nothing growing up.
“I got the best gift of life, of being myself at any given point,” Musa told Skhumba and Ndumiso about his relationship with his father.
As a father today, he’s walking in the parenting footsteps his father set for him. For Musa, there wasn’t a single gap in nurturing and he want to be that kind of father as well. Now he loves that that his 11-year-old son is so sure of himself and his relationship with his father who always comes through for him.
On working with Robbie Malinga
Musa Sukwene’s career a few years after winning the singing competition “Idols” was punctuated by his beloved collaborations with legendary songwriter, producer, musician and singer, Robbie Malinga. Malinga was renown for his songwriting and composing but every so often, his own vocals would show up on his songs.
According to Musa, the late musician always preferred to record alone when featuring on songs. He would empty recording studios when it was time for him to do his verses and harmonies. Robbie Malinga would then later call to say that the verse was done and it was amazing.
