President Ramaphosa was evacuated from an ANC Women’s League event on Thursday. Due to safety concerns around Covid-19 protocols, Ramaphosa was escorted out of the Lebowakgomo Civic Centre.
Concerns for the president’s safety were raised after Covid-19 screening protocols were questioned.
Some people gained access into the venue without being properly screened.
The ANCWL did not want to take further risks with the president’s health.
Having tested positive for Covid-19 in December, and with the hike in infection rates in the country, it would have been irresponsible to allow Ramaphosa to continue his address.
The president was expected to speak at the Lilian Ngoyi Memorial lecture.
Despite the event cancellation, plans for the party’s birthday celebrations will continue. Ramaphosa is currently in Limpopo ahead of the planned celebrations which kick off on 8 January.
