A Durban family’s festive season holiday has been marred by a pool tragedy at a Drakensberg resort. Two brothers aged 7 and 9 found their way into Alpine Health Resort’s pool area unsupervised.
Both boys were in distress in the pool and the younger child died on Sunday evening. The elder brother was taken to the hospital and is currently in ICU.
Uthman Ismail (7) was laid to rest on Monday. He would have been entering Grade 2 in the new year. There has been no updates on his brother Moin Ismail’s condition.
At the time of publication, the resort’s General Manager was unavailable for comment.
According to sources, the parents were enjoying a meal at the restaurant when the children snuck off.
Staff were alerted to the boys being in distress in the pool and acted swiftly. CPR was performed on the boys by the resort’s first aid responders.
Local paramedics arrived on scene but were unable to resuscitate the younger brother, while the elder brother was stabilised.
An enquiry into the tragedy has been opened. The Drakensberg resort is a 4-star holiday destination.
Management at the resort are said to be doing everything they can to support the family during this difficult time.
Counselling and trauma support has been offered to the parents.
