The Good Friday team with Skhumba and Ndumiso recently invited veteran actor Vusi Thanda on the regular segment #BlomBlom to share his story.
Vusi Thanda is a South African actor who became a household name in the 90’s when he played ‘Tshawe’ in one of the country’s iconic sitcoms, Emzini Wezinsizwa which ran from 1993 to 2005.
At the age of 67, he’s still going strong, mostly because he considers himself to be youthful and mischievous. He recalls his early days on the sitcom and how difficult it was to break into the industry, comparing it to today’s generation.
“It was very hard, acting has many ups and downs and hardships, I recall this one time I had to walk all the way from Tembisa to Witkoppen to look for employment. Those days weren’t like today, today they ask you how many followers you have.”

Emzini Wezinsizwa humorously shed light on the living conditions of many migrant labourers in South Africa as well as social issues that plagued the country. Thanda also spoke about how he felt when his co-stars from the sitcom passed away.
“Every time you hear the news of a someone passing its like hearing a canon in a way, it’s hard to hear that a person you’ve been so close to for years has passed. Every time someone from Emzini Wezinzizwa passes I have fears of getting a cold, even an aching knee frighten me. It’s very scary, you ask yourself who is next?”
He also shared some of the memories of where his career has taken him and how his talents have seen him dine with Presidents who appreciated his work on television.
He currently plays the role of uncle Mzoxolo on The Queen and continues to keep audiences on the edge of their seats with his humorous antics.
