Gauteng police and private security companies have been hailed after three suspects were killed and seven arrested in two incidents.
Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo says two suspects were shot dead and five others arrested following a shootout in Benoni on Saturday. He says police recovered four firearms allegedly used by the suspects.
“The police’s Crime Intelligence shared information about a gang that was going to commit a business robbery in Ekurhuleni with a multidisciplinary team,” Masondo says.
Several law enforcement agencies, including the Hawks, assisted in tracking track down the suspects.
Masondo says the team kept close observation and intercepted two cars in Brentwood Park Benoni – a white Mercedes Benz with four occupants and a Silver Grey Polo Vivo with three occupants.
“Upon seeing the police, suspects started shooting at the police and a shootout ensued. Two of the suspects were fatally wounded while five suspects were cornered and arrested. Police recovered four firearms belonging to the suspects,” he says.
In a separate incident on Friday, police arrested two suspects during a shootout with the police in Ennerdale.
Police fatally wounded in the shootout. The suspects allegedly robbed a chain store in the area. Police recovered three unlicensed firearms that belonged to the suspects.
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela commended the good work performed by the team.
“These arrests of armed suspects happened soon after we launched our Safer Festive Season Operations. We want to send a strong message that there won’t be space in Gauteng for criminals to maneuver this festive season,” he says.
