Since the vaccine programme was open to children in SA between 12-17 years, more than 39 000 children have registered for the jab.
Registration for children opened on Wednesday with Gauteng leading the pack with 15,573 children signed up.
This was followed by the Western Cape at 10,589 and KZN with 5,676. The Eastern Cape and Free State account for 2,397 and 1,397 registrations respectively.
The 39 000 children will receive just 1 dose of the Pfizer vaccine after it was ruled safe for the 12-17 age bracket.
The U.S have already initiated plans to rollout the vaccine to younger children between 5-11 years of age.
President Biden’s administration aims to have the vaccine authorized for younger children before the Christmas season begins.
To date, more than 20 million doses have been administered in South Africa, with 11 million people reported to be fully vaccinated.
The health department hopes to vaccinate at least half of this age group by the start of the school holidays.
