Three suspects were arrested following a mass shooting in Mitchells Plain, Western Cape on Saturday. A woman was killed and 7 others, including 3 children were injured in the drive-by shooting.
What was supposed to be a 21st birthday celebration ended in tragedy after occupants of a green Honda Ballade opened fired at guests.
The children were aged 5, 12 and 13 and the woman who was killed was 24-years old.
The motive for the shooting is unclear but police suspect it is gang-related. Gang violence in the area is common and the community are hesitant to come forward out of fear.
However, guests from the party said none of the partygoers had any links to gang members. Many of the guests were said to be teachers and nurses and their children.
Colonel André Traut said the suspects face charges for murder and attempted murder.
According to police additional operational forces have been deployed in the area to help with the investigations.
Police Minister Bheki Cele said the province has the most police resources in the country.
Meanwhile, Premier Alan Winde dismissed Cele’s claims saying the high levels of crime in Mitchells Plain say otherwise. An estimated 2.35 million illegal firearms are in circulation in SA.
