Another senior government official has been killed in a tragic car crash.
The Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services confirmed that Khaya Somgqeza died in a crash outside Mthatha on Friday.
“His death has sent shockwaves in the ministry as well as both departments under the ministry’s leadership,” said department spokesperson Chrispin Phiri.
Somgqeza had previously worked as divisional manager of International Relations in parliament before assuming his role as head of office for Deputy Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Patekile Holomisa
Minister Ronald Lamola described Somgqeza as an experienced public servant who executed his responsibilities with immense dedication and commitment.
“His commitment to his work and his vast experience in diplomacy, enhanced relations between the ministry and its various stakeholders. With his sharp eye for detail, Somgqeza contributed significantly towards the ministry’s mandate of creating safer communities in the country.
His thoughtful insight will be sorely missed particularly when analyzing various reports presented before the ministry,” the minister said.
“We convey our deepest condolences to his family and friends and assure them that their loss is equally ours as Somgqeza leaves a void that will be difficult to fill,” he added.

Joburg mayor dies in crash
Last weekend, Johannesburg mayor Jolidee Matongo was killed in a car crash on the Golden Highway.
He was on his way back from an election rally in Soweto. It is alleged that Matongo’s vehicle was travelling along the highway when a pedestrian ran into the road.
Authorities said Matongo’s driver swerved to avoid crashing into the pedestrian and collided with a bakkie.
The pedestrian and driver of the other vehicle, Sagel Singh, died later in hospital.
Matongo’s driver and his bodyguard remain in hospital.
Police have confirmed that a case of reckless and negligent driving have been opened at the Lenasia South police station and investigations are ongoing.
Matongo’s funeral was held on Friday. Matongo only recently just took over the role as the city’s mayor following the death of Geoff Makhubo.
