Movie boffins are in for a treat this year, with an enormous number of comic book movie releases from both DC and Marvel. Added into the mix are other big blockbusters, thrilling horrors and sci-fi conclusions, which means an epic year of box-office magic.
Here are 10 of the most eagerly awaited releases for 2021.
1. Black Widow – Expected release May 2021
Marvel are at it again with origin stories of much-loved characters lined up throughout the year. They kick things of with Black Widow, starring Scarlett Johansson who plays Natasha Romanoff. Her origin story is dark, giving us deeper insight into her background after being handed over to the KGB at birth and how she ends up with the Avengers.
2. Venom: Let There Be Carnage – Expected release June 2021
After the success of the first movie in the franchise, fans could not wait to see Tom Hardy back in the role of our favourite symbiote Klyntar, aka Venom. With the release being pushed out since October 2020, it’s a much-awaited box-office crusher that sees Woody Harrelson as Carnage.
Fans are hoping the sequel gives “She-Venom” screen-time and Spiderman a cameo, because crossovers between the universes is something Marvel executes brilliantly. We’ll have to wait until June to find out. Producer Matt Tolmach is not giving much away in terms of plot device, except that the sequel will not be R-rated.
3. Minions: The Rise of Gru – Expected release July 2021
Everyone’s favourite banana-brained minions are back in a fifth instalment that tells the tale of 12-year-old Gru and his rise as a villain.
4. Uncharted – Expected release July 2021
With rumours that the gaming prequel will see Antonio Banderas returning to the big-screen, cinema-goers are in for a treat with the release of Uncharted. Starring Spiderman’s Tom Holland as Nathan Drake, the upcoming action adventure has been a long time coming.
Fans of the Naughty Dog video game have been calling for a movie since, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune was released on Playstation in 2007.

5. Paw Patrol: The Movie – Expected release August 2021
The hugely popular and courageous rescue pups take to the big-screen in “paw-some” fashion. Ryder and his team of pups – Chase, Marshall, Rocky, Zuma, Rubble, and Skye – are on a mission to save the day in Adventure Bay. No job is too big, no pup is too small.
6. 007: No time to die – Expected release April 2021
The suave 007 agent Bond, James Bond, played by Daniel Craig, has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica. His retirement is short-lived when an old friend from the CIA turns up needing his help. The movie is said to be Craig’s final instalment as the character, with the next Bond still not being confirmed.
7. Fast & Furious 9 – Expected release April 2021
Who knew when the first Fast & Furious set the pace in 2001, that we’d be here 20 years later with a ninth movie in the series. But wait there’s more. The plan was for the 10th and final instalment of the franchise to culminate in an epic end this year, but because of delays due to COVID-19, we can now expect the second part of the finale in 2022.
8. The Matrix 4 – Expected release December 2021
Neo (Keanu Reeves) returns alongside Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) in the Lana Wachowski-directed fourth instalment. Plot details are under strict lock and key, leaving fans of the franchise frazzled with the lack of information. Initially, movie fanatics thought it was just a rumour that a fourth movie was on the table until Keanu Reeves described the screenplay as an inspiring love story.
9. A Quiet Place 2 – Expected release April 2021
The sequel to the 2018 post-apocalyptic sci-fi horror is set to terrorise cinemagoers in April this year. The movie continues where the first left off, with the Abbott family now making an attempt to build a life away from home. In absolute silence. It’s the only way to survive alien monsters who hunt them using only sound.
10. Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway – Expected release April 2021
The lovable rogue rabbit is back. Bea, Thomas, and the rabbits have created a makeshift family, but despite his best efforts, Peter can’t seem to shake his mischievous reputation. Venturing out of the garden, Peter finds himself in a world where his mischief is appreciated, but when his family risks everything to come looking for him, Peter must figure out what kind of bunny he wants to be.
