Trailblazer, mountaineer, motivational speaker, author and all-round genuine guy, Sibusiso Vilane was the iconic guest in Part 2 of Kaya 959’s in-depth and exclusive #ConversationsWithJerry.
Chairman of the Board at Kaya 959, Jerry Mabena, led the panel of guests in discussion with Sibusiso, talking about his life, loves and success.
An adrenaline charged weekend in SANParks’ hospitality, had our VIP guests heading to the Tsitsikamma National Park. An expansive stretch of temperate forests and acres of rocky terrain surrounding the stunning South Coast.
Guests boarded a luxurious yacht cruise from the Knysna waterfront to the Knysna Heads. Indulging in the sustainably farmed ocean delicacy, some of the finest oysters in the country.
A rainy entry from Knysna to the Tsitsikamma National Park was our welcome into the stunning Storms River rest camp. Log cabins perched atop the shore, awaited our guests, all against a mountainous backdrop. If tranquility could be preserved, Tsitsikamma would be the beautiful outcome.
One does not bring the first black African to summit the seven highest peaks on each continent, to this SANParks gem and not take him on an adventure of sorts. Tamer than most expeditions he’s led, we spent a morning hiking to the famous Suspension Bridge across the Storms River mouth.
The 45 minute hike was probably just a warm up to Sibusiso, who has been scaling mountains since 1996, when he met John Doble. The weekend’s activities, included a kayak and lilo experience through the Storms River mouth and a segway and zipline canopy tour.
In speaking to Sibusiso, we learned that he prefers his feet firmly on the ground and water-based activities or zipping through a forest is not his idea of an adventure. Which is why he’s known as “The King Of The Trails”.
Sibusiso is an esteemed and popular motivational speaker, giving talks throughout South Africa, encouraging people to conquer their own Everest. In listening to him, one cannot help but marvel at his humble nature. Here’s a man who’s accomplished feats most humans are afraid to comprehend and yet he remains grounded with a oneness about him that is magnetic.
The panel in discussion with Sibusiso included, Kaya 959 MD, Greg Maloka, Mike Siluma, presenter of Karibu on Kaya 959, producer Dinika Naidoo and of course, Jerry. Questions from other guests were also welcomed and Sibusiso made for an engaging guest.
We learnt more about his journey from a game ranger in Swaziland to his many successful summits atop the worlds’ most intimidating peaks. The dialogue took place at the Nature’s Valley resort, a mind-blowingly stunning backdrop, thirty minutes from Tsitsikamma.
When asked what his family thinks about his achievements, Sibusiso answers honestly that he can only hope they speak off him with pride. He maintains that their support means everything to him and when the question of scaling Everest again comes up, he quickly dismisses it.
Venturing through Greenland on foot is where his mind is at. Challenging himself with these feats is a holistic quest, both physically death defying and mentally grueling and this is what fuels his spirit.
